Face Cream

Make a light face cream of :

!/4 cup beeswax
1 cup of olive oil
1/2 cup of water
2 drops of perfume

Melt the beeswax, oil and water together, then beat for 15 minutes. Stir in the perfume and keep in a jar sealed with a tight lid.


Rose Petal Cream for the face.

Soak 1 cup of crushed rose petals in 1/2 cup of white wine for 3 days. Shake up the bottle twice a day. Strain. Stir in 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 teaspoon of honey. Apply to the face each morning and evening to prevent age lines. You may substitute Lilly of the Valley flowers for the rose petals.

A rich everyday face cream is made of:

1/2 cup of beeswax
1/2 cup of parafin
1 cup of olive oil

Warm all until melted, beat with a wooden spoon until cool.  Mashed potatoes and olive oil can be combined for a good hand conditioning cream.

Hand Cream

To prepare a good hand cream, carefully melt 1 cup of beeswax into 1 cup of light olive oil. Stir in as many flowers of the elderberry plant as the concoction will take. Keep very warm on the back of the stove for at least an hour. Strain through a cloth jelly bag squeezing it out as much as possible. Store in a glass jar with a tight lid.

Skin Lotion

A gentle lotion for softening the skin is made of olive oil with a little castor oil in it. A body lotion to soften the skin and preserve the look of youth is made by melting 1 cup of beeswax into two cups of castor oil. Stir in as many flowers of the elderberry plant as possible. Set in the sun all day then press through a muslin cloth. Store in a glass jar with a tight lid.

Sunscreen

Sun may be screened from the skin by applying a solution of 1/2 olive oil to 1/2 white wine

Use camomile oil to keep the skin looking young and glowing with health. Combine 1 quart olive oil and 1 cup camomile flowers. Set all day on a warm part of the stove. Then press very firmly through a jelly bag. Use on all skin, a little goes a long way.

Body lotion

Make a nice lotion for the body by adding 1 cup beepalm leaves to 2 cups of white wine and 1 quart of olive oil. Set aside for 4 days then simmer off the wine.

To Care for the Lips

Heal sore and cracked lips with an extraction of  red clover blossomsm gathered while still holding the dew of the morning; and boil in 2 quarts of water. When the water is reduced by half, press through a jelly bag. Add another handful of blossoms to this liquid and repeat the process. Use the resulting extraction frequently.

Heal cracked lips with a cream made of :

1/2 cup beeswax
1/2 cup castor oil
1/3 cup olive oil
2 drops perfume

Melt it all together then beat for 10 minutes. Store in a covered container.  Sores upon the lips and around the mouth are much relieved by applications of white wine in which sage has been soaked.

 

To Clean and Whiten the Teeth

To ensure white teeth clean breath, brush with this special teeth whitener:

1 Tablespoon soda
1 Tablespoon salt
1 Teaspoon lemon juice
1 Drop Oil of Peppermint

If you want a healthy mouth and pretty white teeth, rinse the mouth twice a day with 1/2 cup of warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide. For nice white teeth, rub them every morning with a lemon peel.

Sassafras twigs make good teeth cleaners and breath fresheners. Just pull off a fresh sassafras twig and chew the end until it's well shredded.  Then use it to remove any pieces of food between your teeth. It will keep your breath nice and fresh!

To cleanse the entire body, put 1/2 cup of yesterday's milk in a heavy bowl, cover, and set beside the kitchen stove. Wait a couple of days, until it becomes solidly sour. Beat good and mix into 2 cups of warm, fresh milk. Set near the stove overnight and beat well before using for a morning body rub.

BODY PACKS & FACE MASKS

To clean and refresh the skin, dissolve a packet of dry yeast in just enough warm water to make a paste. Gently pat it onto face and neck and allow to dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with clear, tepid water.

Dab Milk of Magnesia on too oily skin and let dry. Rinse off with lots of water. Or, make a lather of water, soap and salt. Gently rub onto the face and neck. Let set for one minute. Rinse well with cool water.

Make a nice, special face cleaner by mashing a very ripe banana and adding the juice of a lemon. Leave on the face for 15 minutes, then rinse with clear water.

A restoring facial can be made of: 1 cup sour milk

1 tablespoon honey

2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 well beaten egg white

To maintain a happy outlook, treat the whole body to a good skin cleaning once a week. It will remove the week's build up of impurities. Cover the entire body with a cleaning pack and sit quietly and meditate on pleasant thoughts for a quarter hour. Wipe the cleanser and impurities off with a soft cloth. Then, clarify the body by pouring several pitchers of cool water over yourself.

Clean the entire body by rubbing down with 2 cups oatmeal, 1 cup buttermilk and 1/4 cup lemon juice.

Chop into some water and boil 1 orange and 1 lemon for 20 minutes. Mash into 3 cups oatmeal and apply to the body before bathing.

Mix together 1 cup cornmeal and enough buttermilk to make a thick paste. Apply to the body and let dry. Rinse with lots of fresh, cool water.

Shiny Hair

Boil a big handful of birch leaves in a quart of water, strain and use to rinse the hair for soft, gleaming tresses. (Birch sap mixed in water will do nicely too.)

A few drops of cologne in a cup of water makes an elegant final rinse that leaves a pleasant scent in the air.

Make hair shiny by rinsing all the soap out after your shampoo. Use one cup strong camomile tea for dark hair, three tablespoons lemon juice for in one cup warm water for light hair.

Gentle hair cleaner

Beat together 3 fresh eggs, one tablespoon castor oil and 1/4 cup alcohol.  Work into dry hair and cover with a warm wet towel for 20 minutes. Rinse with rain water and towel dry in the sun.

Rinse hair to remove all traces of soap with a quart of tepid water, to which one tablespoon of vinegar has been added .

Boil together flowers of the violet, rose and jasmine. Strain through a muslin cloth while still warm. This rinse will leave the hair fragrant and alluring.

Apply pleasantly warm olive oil to the hair and scalp. Twist small sections around the fingers to form nice ringlets. Allow to air freely for at least half a day. Wash very good and rinse with a little lavender vinegar in water.

When it is not advisable to wet the head, clean the hair with stiffly beaten egg whites. Work them into the scalp and onto every hair strand. Let the hair dry naturally, without toweling or rubbing. Brush heartily.

Make a tonic to add shine to the hair with 1 quart of water and 1 cup stinging nettles. Boil for 3 minutes and strain through a muslin cloth.

Grate a bar of good white soap and melt it in a quart of boiling water. Add 1/4 cup gelatin. Each time you wash your hair, measure out 1/2 cup and beat a freshly laid egg into it before using.

To Control the Hair

To keep hair from springing too much in the wind, comb sweet milk through it and dry without toweling.

Make a nice hair oil by adding a little rose perfume to olive oil. Keep it capped tight to retain the nice smell.

The best hair oil is made of two parts castor oil and one part alcohol.  Shake together well and add a few drops of perfume.

Skin Tonics

A refreshing skin tonic is made with:
1 cup distilled spirits
1 cup olive oil
5 drops almond oil or perfume

If the face is exposed to sun, or seems hot and flushed, bathe it in camomile tea every three hours. After cleansing, rinse the face with fresh from the churn buttermilk, to nourish and preserve the skin.

Best tonic to tone up sickly skin is made by chopping up:
1/2 cup dandelion root
1/2 cup dock root
1/2 cup rhubarb root
1/2 cup sassafras bark
1 cup red clover blossoms

Bring it all to a boil in a quart of water. Cover and let sit for three hours. Strain and mix a few tablespoons in a glass of water. Drink this every morning and evening for clear, blemish free skin.

Sickly looking skin can be brightened by chopping and boiling, two unpeeled oranges in a quart of water. Mash up real good and add to the lady's bath.

A refreshing tonic can be prepared by boiling leaves of the hazelnut tree in water.

Troubled skin may be cleared by wiping regularly with the broth of boiled cabbage.

Tonic made of borage leaves will improve the complexion greatly.

Cut the peels of 4 lemons into a quart of water and allow to soak for 24 hours. A handkerchief rung out of this water will refresh a face warm with perspiration.

Use water in which beebalm has been simmered to soften the skin.

Summer an uncut mallow root in a quart of water for 20 minutes. Use this broth to refine coarse skin and soften the shoulders and bosom.

If the skin is pale an dflabby, a strong infusion of orange blossoms will tone it up nicely.

Lily petals, simmered for an hour, produce a fine liquid for wiping down the face. This leaves a lady with fine testured, soft skin.

Mash a cup of chickweed into 3 cups of water. Put into a jar with a tight fitting lid and set in the sun, for a full day. Strain and use the liquid to refine coarse skin.

A strong infusion of yarrow will clear blackheads from the face and shoulders.

To guarantee lovely skin, wipe the body down regularly with a quart of milk to which the juice of 3 lemons has been added.

For an instant tonic for the face on warm days, rub down with the peel of a cucumber.

Winter dulled skin can be brightened up for spring with a nice milk wash. Scald 1 cup of fresh, sweet milk with 1/4 cup violets added to it. Let set for 10 minutes and strain. Pat onto the upper body twice a day to make the skin glow with health.

Controlling the Over Robust Appetite

Begin each meal with a nice bowl of freshly picked lettuce, dressed with 2 tablespoons of vinegar or 3 tablespoons of lemon juice.

1/4 cup sauerkraut juice, taken 1/2 hour before meals will dampen too robust an appetite.

Tonic to help lose extra pounds:
1/2 cup chickweed
1 quart water
2 tablespoons honey

Bring to a boil and let cool. Strain and sip when hunger creeps up on you.

Boil dandelion leaves and add a splash of vinegar to the strained water. Sip throughout the day and excess poundage will melt away.

Drink teas of fennel or chickweed to lessen the over active appetite.
