That night Mike remembers the letter perfumed with lilac water addressed
to Sully that Horace had handed her earlier. When Sully takes the letter
and goes out to read it privately, Mike's suspicions are aroused only
to learn the identity of the letter writer is Daniel Simon, a boyhood
friend of Sully who has enlisted a woman's help to write. Michaela's relief
and embarrassment are short lived however upon learning the reason for
the communication. Daniel has found gold and wants Sully to come to Nevada
to help him set up his operations. Not even entertaining the idea that
Sully will leave so soon after their wedding, she assures him that Horace
will surely have no trouble refunding the 2 way ticket that Daniel has
sent. Before Sully can reply, Dorothy appears in need of someplace away
from Loren to sort out her feelings.

When Mike rejoins Sully in the parlor she confides that Loren
has asked Dorothy to marry him. Sully who has known this all
along but been sworn to secrecy by Loren asks if she knows what
Dorothy's reply will be. Mike tells him Dorothy has decided
to say no. As they discuss the pain that this will cause Loren,
Mike is suddenly overcome with the thought of what her life
would have been like had Sully similarly rejected her love.
While Sully attempts to talk to her about his impending plan
to come to Daniel's aid, Mike has far more important things
on her mind! They will talk about Daniel in the morning! |

The next morning, as Mike and Sully pull into town they are
met by a concerned Jake. Loren hasn't opened the shop yet. When
Dorothy peers in the shop window, she discovers to her horror,
Loren prostrate on the floor. The friends break down the door
and rush to his aid. He is alive Mike reports but only barely.
Devestated by the potential loss of Loren forever, Dorothy promises
a comatose Loren that she will marry him if he recovers. To
everyone's astonishment Loren awakes but he is NOT the same
Loren as before. |
