Scene 1

CAROLYN (Jane)

This is it. Send it to Clearances and get -Legal moving on this ASAP.

Carolyn hands over a manuscript and accidentally knocks over a FRAMED PHOTO: a vacation snapshot of herself, Thom and Devon. The assistant rights the frame, as Carolyn spots her wrist-watch and reacts.

CAROLYN
Damn. (explaining) My kid's award ceremony. If Thom calls, tell him I'm on my way. (heads for the door)
And while I'm out, would you query Peter about sub-rights and -

Carolyn's purse RINGS. or rather, the cell phone in it. Carolyn fumbles for it, rueful.

CAROLYN:
Right on schedule. (into the phone) I'm leaving now, Thom... Who is this? (stunned)
Which hospital?

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

The limo pulls away from the cemetery. Carolyn numbly places an arm around Devon, whose wrist is in a cast. With her good hand, Devon traces a pattern on the fogged window.

INT. DEVON'S BEDROOM - DAY

A colorful room full of/art supplies, books and toys. The perfect playground for an imaginative and curious child.
Alone, Devon star at a SMALL PACKAGE on her desk. She pulls back the flaps. Inside is a SHINY MEDAL on a purple ribbon: the "Gracie Medal."

She dully drops the medal into a wastebasket beside the desk, After a moment, she violently sweeps her arm across the nearby bookshelf, knocking other awards, books and toys to the floor.

Eight Years Later

A HAND drops a LIGHTED MATCH into a rusted, public trash-can near a small foot-bridge. Fire spreads among the refuse. For a moment, she appears to be holding a fireball in her palm. When the flame disappears, her hand is unhurt. Carolyn, hating this trick, glares at her, turns on the car. Devon proceeds to do it again. Gas, lighter, flame.Carolyn snatches the lighter and flings it out the window. Devon smiles, victorious in getting a rise out of her mother.

DEVON
Littering's a crime, Mom.

INT. GARAGE/ART STUDIO - NIGHT 11

Devon melts the faces of METAL FIGURINES with a mini blow torch -- items for a new artwork. Carolyn hovers nearby.

CAROLYN
My hair's falling out and I'm losing weight. Can we talk about this?

Devon accidently burns her hand. Disregards the pain. Carolyn grabs the tool from her daughter and fumbles to switch it off. She turns over Devon's hand, a fresh red welt forming -' among older scars.

CAROLYN :
You need help.

DEVON
Neosporin. I got it covered.

Devon runs cold water over her hand at the utility sink.

CAROLYN
That's not what I -

Carolyn moves to follow her but trips over an EASEL. Or at least the charred remnants of one. Carolyn picks up a crossbar that looks like petrified wood.

CAROLYN
What the?... Is this the easel I got for your birthday?

DEVON

Oh yeah, thanks. Quality wood there.

CAROLYN (almost despairing) Why? You used to love painting.

DEVON
You don't think it's beautiful?
Look at the grain. Besides, working with junk suits me.

Carolyn (taking control)
I'm not saying we need a rehab clinic or even reform schoo, but there are places where you...

Devon looks up sharply.

Devon
Places?

Carolyn
I already made the call.
