Jane Seymour, artist and star of 'Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,' chats Friday evening with guests at a reception for her show of paintings at Simic New Renaissance Gallery in Carmel.

CARMEL -- Champagne and connoisseurs aflow, actress Jane Seymour was in Carmel-By-The-Sea Friday to show her artwork at a gallery reception. Thirty minutes before the 6 p.m. event, a warm back room at Simic New Renaissance Gallery began to fill. Fans, artists and buyers checked out colorful prints and paintings of flowers and landscapes by the former "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" of television fame. Tourists Charles and Cynthia Crockett, who got to chat with Seymour, said they had no idea flying out from Colorado they'd get to meet the star -- and buy one of her paintings. "We have a hard house to hang art," said Charles Crockett, explaining that the couple's house is mostly made of glass but they would make a special effort to hang "The Kiss," a painting by Seymour of herself kissing Christopher Reeve. Seymour said she's painted throughout her life, but not seriously until 14 years ago. "I lost everything, financially, emotionally" -- including her father and a marriage -- at that time, she said. "(Painting) took me to a whole new place." Now filming "The Wedding Crashers" with actors Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, Seymour said she tries to paint even while on the set.

Part of the proceeds from Friday's reception will go to the Art Global Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children in need with art talent.
