Jane Answers Your Questions.

While on a well deserved vacation after filming Dear Prudence, Jane took time out to answer a few more questions presented by the fans.

1. What was your initial reaction to the script?.
I thought it was different.  A fun character, and a great premise. I thought it was a new character for me to play that would be both comedic and realistic at the same time. I liked the idea of the murder mystery and of course the relationship between Nigel and me.

2. What was your biggest challenge in bringing Prudence to life?
Deciding on her hair. Only kidding!
But really, coming up with a new look that would suit me and really be a new character for me to play and a kind of sassy New York talk show host.  The hair was one of the challenges.  The next challenge was finding the right level with the comedy.

3. Did you find, as you got more into filming that you were able to relate to her more and more?
I got comfortable with Prudence very quickly as we started shooting with some major scenes. And the more I played her the more fun I had. I especially enjoyed creating her surreptitious walk.

4. Do you think your Prudence was different from the way she was originally written and if so how?
We totally tailored Prudence to me. We decided to make her English although she lived in NY for most of her life. We made her a part time artist, which comes from me. We gave lots of ideas and notes to the writer. He took elements of me, elements of ideas I had and incorporated them into the rewrite. He filled out the character.

4. Do you have a favorite, cute, funny or touching memory from the filming you can share?
I couldn’t say “cowboy boot prints”.  I could not get that out of my mouth.
So I got the giggling fit doing that on a rainy day at the top of a mountain.
I remember playing scenes with Ryan where I had to kiss him or jump on top of him, and do some of these pratfall type comedic moments, the director and some of the people watching the screen started laughing out loud in the middle of the shot.  The other moment I remember when we were about to shoot one scene my son Johnny was playing guitar in the next room and we suddenly thought the soundtrack had already been created; we had no idea where the music was coming from.

5. Can you talk about the relationship between Nigel and Prudence? Nigel one assumes must be young and headstrong, impetuous - how is he a good partner for someone who also sounds rather impetuous and headstrong? Nigel is brilliant but completely inept when it comes to real life and terrified of everything.  Prudence is the brave one who just goes out and does stuff and Nigel is the one she has to convince to do what she tells him to do. Nigel is not headstrong.  He is quite a scaredy cat.  Nigel is always telling Prudence that she shouldn’t do things because she’ll be breaking the law and getting into trouble and it’ll be dangerous and they’ll get murdered.  Prudence is the one that just overrides his fears and just gets on with it.

Some other tidbits ……

They hired a stunt man to make sure I’d be ok on the back of the Indian motorcycle.  Never got to drive very far on it, but it was fun.  I can now understand why people love that whole motorcycle thing.

My favorite piece of clothing from the show was the motorcycle jacket.

Since Dr. Quinn people have always asked me to tend to their ailments, their medical needs, now I’m going to be asked for practical advice, so I’m going to have to read up on the answers.  Prudence will have to teach me.

I was not going to wear the Open Heart jewelry but the costume designer loved it and felt it was quite perfect for Prudence.
