One of the highlights of the day for me, personally, was meeting a woman who introduced herself as the grandmother of Julie, the young cancer survivor who had received tickets to Dancing with the Stars, partly thanks to Jane’s generous donation of one of her healing heart paintings which had helped to pay the airfare for Julie and her mom. Through the Andréa Rizzo Foundation, whose mission is to provide dance therapy for children with cancer, and special needs, Julie received the trip to Hollywood, to be a special guest of the show, complete with airfare and hotel accommodations. With a voice brimming with emotion, Julie’s grandmother showed me a photo of her beautiful granddaughter and told me how much Jane’s gift had meant to not just Julie but the entire family; adding how it had indirectly opened up so many doors for the foundation by bringing new attention to it. As I listened to her, I thought once more of how many lives had been touched in some positive way by Jane, probably many more than she will ever know.
After Julie’s grandmother disappeared into the crowd, I rejoined my friends at Jane’s table. At this point, Jane was busy showing some of her newest ‘box’ artwork to the group surrounding her. These were paintings of flowers in the most vivid hues that almost looked like the tops of decorator boxes on first glance because of the depth of the canvas. Jane told us how she had thought of perhaps not just signing the paintings but inscribing them along the sides with quotes from her books and movies. She then asked us for some suggestions. That was all it took, quotes immediately started flying fast and furious- among them ‘ I’m not a lady I’m a doctor’ to a slightly more risque one that to our surprise Jane embraced with a laugh (from her appearance on “In Case of Emergency”) ‘ Be good to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone!” As art patrons approached the desk later in the afternoon to purchase any of these particular pieces, Jane would invite them to select a quote from the list we had compiled with her.; it proved to be a winning idea. Delighted with the response, Jane eagerly requested that we try to come up with more quotes which we promised to do by the next day.
True to our word, that night we posted to the DQ Times forum, asking for help with ‘Jane quotes’ and by the next morning, our list was full. Jane seemed thrilled with the list and asked if I would post it to my website and invite more fans to contribute as she wanted to be able to offer a list of quotes for prospective buyers to choose from rather then ask them to come up with something on the spot. I promised to do so as soon as I returned home. (view list of Jane Quotes and submit your own) One of our group, Deb, proved to be one of the first customers of the new personalized artwork, choosing everyone’s favorite, a striking floral set against a bright blue background upon which at Deb’s request, Jane inscribed various quotes from Dr. Quinn and her movies.
