In a desperate attempt to save their relationship, the two married in 1977 during the making of the film, The Four Feathers. Their union lasted just one year. Geep returned to England and Jane threw all her energy into her career, making one film after another until her role as Cathy / Kate in the miniseries East of Eden, which won her a Golden Globe and emmy nomination, showed her amazing range and put to rest any doubts that she was a serious actress.
Somewhere In Time
In 1980, Jane won the role of Elise McKenna in what was destined to become a cult film- Somewhere in Time opposite Christopher Reeve; who was fresh off his megahit Superman. The film was the ultimate romantic fantasty about a young man who falls in love with a woman depicted in a portrait and travels back in time to meet her. It was a small film made on a tiny budget (2 million) and due in part to a lack of publicity (there was an actor's strike at the time) it didn't do well at the box office. But the concept about "the one" that everyone is destined to meet began to slowly, over the years, develop a huge following.
Today, Somewhere in Time has found a whole new audience, especially among many college students and surprisingly even many men. It has even spawned an international fan following known as INSITE which invites its members each year to reunite for a weekend on Mackinac Island, the setting for the film. The making of the movie also gave Jane an even greater personal gift- a life-long friendship with her costar- the late Christopher Reeve.
