WOLF PROFILE  by Anne E. Urban *WOLF*, AKA *THE WOLF* - friend to Sully, and member of the Quinn-Cooper-Sully family, as evidenced by his appearance in the "family" portrait taken at Katie's Christening; citizen of Colorado Springs, as evidenced by his appearance in the Town Photo.

BACKGROUND:WOLF - This is the animal Linnaeus, in 1788, called "Canis lupus." It is a member of theFamily "Canidae," which also includes the fox and coyote. Wolves are Holarctic. That means, they were once found in most of the Northern Hemisphere, above 30 degrees north latitude. Their range was extensive, and their adaptability was significant when you think of the geography of the areas they roamed.

That, of course, is their past. Today, there are only two species in existence. The red wolf only exists in the US, and is an endangered species. The gray wolf can be found in Europe, Asia, and North America. Grays are extinct in many of their old habitat areas, and in some, their presence is simply not known. It is amazing to realize now, but wolves were not studied in a serious, scientific manner until the early 1940s.

Of the 23 subspecies that taxonomist Edward Goldman identified in North America in 1945, seven are no longer found. Included among these would be the Great Plains wolf (also known as lobo) and the northern and southern Rocky Mountain wolves (which I would speculate, are most likely the ancestors
of our *WOLF*].

Ode to a Wolf

Lonely survival trusting no man to call his friend, Howling at the moon, what does his message send?Wolf asked for little in a world filled with greed and hate, A world now controlled by man that would unjustly seal his fate.

"Beware of the Wolf, The Big Bad Wolf", all the humans cry."There's a sharp edge to his teeth and an evil in his eye!"But, not our Wolf, our gentle Wolf, no one but Sully could understand, The mystery of this creature God had placed upon this land.

Loyal to the death, this lonely wolf was by no means an enemy, Condemned without a trial to live no longer wild and free. As it was for the coyote, the buffalo and grizzly bear,Man sadly had discovered that he'd treated all unfair.Too soon they were endangered and no longer roamed the land, Because we never took the time to fully comprehend. The balance between nature and man must not be lost,It must be protected by new laws and preserved at any cost. For if the wolf and all like him are omitted from the chain, Can man be sure that he'll survive and on this earth remain? One thing we've learned from Sully and the Wolf he held so dear, is that the root of ignorance in man in spawned from biased fear. Do not be silent gentle Wolf as you serenade us with your call, As you regain your natural place standing forever proud and tall.
